When we speak of web hosting servers, there are three major varieties - shared web hosting servers, VPS (virtual servers) and dedicated hosting servers. Shared hosting servers accommodate a lot of customers and thus the resources per web hosting account are limited, virtual private server packages give you more server configuration autonomy, but also affect other VPS servers on the hardware node if utilized imprudently, and dedicated servers offer you the opportunity to perform everything you please without messing with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated hosting server?

Dedicated servers are generally much more high-priced than shared web servers or VPS servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The explanation is quite simple. If your corporation has a frequently visited web portal, or simply has very explicit web server architecture requirements, the most logical choice would be a dedicated server. For somebody who is prepared to invest in security and dependability, the bigger price is of no concern. You gain full root privileges and can use 100 percent of the dedicated hosting web server's system resources without anyone else utilizing these resources and meddling with your web pages.

Hardware architectures

Most shared hosting suppliers, incl. us at xhosters, offer several different hardware configurations you can choose from based on your requirements. The hardware configurations include different varieties of microprocessors, a different amount of cores, different RAM and hard disk sizes and different traffic quotas. You can select a web hosting Control Panel, which is a convenient user interface if you want to use the dedicated hosting server for hosting purposes solely and choose not to resort to a Secure Shell client for all the modifications you will be making. We offer three kinds of web hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting CP of your choosing

If you are a self-assured Linux user (our dedicated hosting servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated server through SSH exclusively. That, though, could be inconvenient, especially if you choose to give root access to somebody else who has less technical knowledge than yourself. That is why having Control Panel software pre-activated is an intelligent idea. The Hepsia Control Panel graphical user interface that we provide does not give you root-level access and is mainly suitable for somebody who has many websites that absorb a lot of resources, but prefers to manage the online portals, databases and email aliases through an easy-to-use web hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting Control Panels, on the other hand, give you complete root-level access and have three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell hosting packages rather than utilizing the server just for yourself, you should choose one of these two.

Server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated hosting server and of backing it up. In case of a problem with your hosting server, such as a non-responsive Apache or a network outage, it is advisable to have some sort of monitoring platform activated. Here at xhosters the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated hosting server as well. Backups are also a bonus feature - the hosting services provider offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could select a type of RAID that would permit you to have the same data on two hard disks as a precaution in case of a disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given root access deletes something accidentally.
